Stamping the Electrification Boom. From Battery Trays to Busbars.

The Short Version

Electrification is rewriting pressroom demand. Battery enclosures, busbars, motor laminations, and structural brackets each ask something different of a press: deep draws in high strength aluminum, burr free edges in soft copper, and lamination volumes that never let up. Sutherland covers the full spread with servo hydraulic and mechanical press systems, I-PRESS® controls, and servo coil feed lines engineered as one line, not a collection of parts.

Walk any electrification program, whether it is an EV platform, a battery energy storage system, or the charging infrastructure connecting them, and you will find the same truth: nearly every structural and conductive component in it starts life on a press.

The catch is that these parts do not behave like traditional automotive stampings. The materials are less forgiving, the tolerances are tighter, and the volumes climb fast once a program ramps. Choosing press technology by habit is how programs end up fighting springback, burrs, and bottlenecks for their entire lifecycle.

The Parts Driving Demand

Four Part Families. Four Different Problems.

01

Battery Enclosures & Trays

Deep draws and complex forms in high strength aluminum. Springback control and repeatable slide motion decide whether the part seals and the sealant beads land where they should.

02

Busbars & Terminals

Copper and aluminum conductors where a burr is not a cosmetic issue, it is an electrical and thermal defect. Blanking quality and die protection are everything.

03

Motor & Transformer Laminations

Thin electrical steel at relentless volume. Feed accuracy, consistent tonnage, and uptime measured in millions of strokes.

04

Structural Brackets & Shielding

High strength steel brackets, EMI shielding, and enclosure hardware. Progressive die work that rewards a rigid frame and precise guiding.

Why Motion Control Matters

Forming high strength aluminum and copper is a motion problem before it is a tonnage problem. Sutherland servo hydraulic presses give you programmable motion profiles, so you can slow through the working zone, dwell at bottom, and release in a controlled way that tames springback. On the mechanical side, our straight side presses pair rigid frames and precise guiding with I-PRESS® controls, including die monitors and function monitoring that catch a problem before it becomes a scrapped coil or a crashed die.

LIVE

Just as important is what wraps around the press. A busbar line living with burr specs needs die protection watching every stroke. A lamination line needs a servo feed that holds pitch accuracy at speed. Every Sutherland press ships with I-PRESS® controls on Allen Bradley or Omron platforms, with Ethernet I/P connectivity that integrates feeders, transfer systems, and robots into one coordinated line.

Start With the Part, Not the Press

Send us your part prints, material specs, and volume targets. Our engineering and applications teams will come back with a press, feed line, and control package sized for the program, and we will show you the technology running at our new Showroom and R&D Technology Center in Ventura, California.
